He revealed a lengthy letter.

He did not leave in anger, or amid scandal, but in the quiet, devastating honesty that always set him apart. In his Instagram farewell, Messi spoke like a man emptied out: time had run its course, his legs and heart had given everything, and there was nothing left to offer but gratitude. He thanked coaches, teammates, officials, and above all the fans whose songs had followed him across continents.

The timing made it even more painful. His words, first written days after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat to Spain, were sealed in grief after the death of his father, Jorge, the man who walked beside him from Rosario’s dusty pitches to global immortality. Now, Messi becomes one more voice in the stands, leaving behind records, trophies and memories that feel almost mythical. Argentina will move on; football will evolve. But the era of Lionel Messi in that shirt is over—and nothing will ever feel quite the same again.
